At the public consultation held in the Baclayon Cultural Center last Thursday, October 3 for the proposed municipal ordinance entitled “Providing regulatory guidelines for the conservation of whale sharks within the municipal waters of the Municipality of Baclayon” authored by Councilor Erico Joseph T. Cañete, the first stakeholder opinion was from a fisherman, and it was in opposition to the ordinance. His statement was brief, and but the gist of it is captured in this quip: “kay naa na man jud nang mga whale sharks, nganong di man na ‘nato pahimuslan”. (A fraction of the audience actually applauded to this; the nays had a contingent.)
June 9, 2018 – Carrying hand-painted pro-ocean anti-plastic placards and hardy eco-warrior hearts, 67 Boholanos marched 19 kilometers from Tagbilarn City’s Plaza Rizal (Kilometer Zero) to Alona Beach in Tawala, Panglao to raise awareness to the worsening threats to the world’s oceans and seas.
Locally named “Baktas Alang sa Kadagatan”, the event takes its cue from the USA’s “March for the Ocean”, (also set today and replicated globally) which advocates for the same intensified action to protect the oceans. The march echoes the call for the ban of single-use plastics, reduction of all forms of ocean pollution, corporate accountability for plastic pollution, and the protection of vulnerable coastal communities.
Sunday morning, 28th of January, there was an unusual hustle and bustle in downtown
Batuan, Bohol. While its famous roadside attraction, the ShipHaus, still
drew in the usual selfie-stick-toting tourist-types – elsewhere in the
poblacion, around the market, the municipio, the plaza, and the
ogee-arched parish church, brimmed with people, young and old, excitedly
awaiting the start of Batuan’s own Sto. Niño fête, the Guimbawan
Festival.
Some like their chocolates and sikwate sweet, some like theirs bitter; but everyone will like a sweeter, better cacao industry in Bohol as both government agencies and private organizations offer more and more initiatives pushing for its growth and expansion.
This was the consensus during the first Bohol Cacao Summit and Exposition, on Friday, the 2nd of September 2016 at the Kew Hotel this city, which gathered more than 95 cacao stakeholders from Bohol, Manila, Samar, Cagayan de Oro and Dumaguete.
22 July 2016 - For once, a Bohol Day brought us a Sandugo event where the performers were genuinely having fun -- more smiles, vigour and energey and less strained & exhausted faces (the late afternoon start sure helped) -- which inspired the audience and in turn inspired the performers. It also helped that the familiar fun(ny), upbeat melody, lyrics and dance steps (!) of the Kuradang that harked back actual fiestas and family celebrations had us all beaming and wanting to join in the fun.
Very briefly, Friday night, Freds Book Cafe became the "Sagada" for millennial broken hearts as the coffeeshop-cum-library hosted its first poetry night bannered "Music and Heartbreak".

The intimate gathering kicked off with the reading of "Broken Hearts" written by literati-snubbed social-media-darling multimedia artist Lang Leav. Where the first line of the night is -- "I know you’ve lost someone and it hurts." -- you know you're in the company of romantics who embrace all of love and life's joys and pains.
